photo by kimxtomHow have you been doing memorizing God’s word this week?  I have to confess I have experienced more of a “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” kind of week myself.  Though I am always in awe of God of how he works together what I am teaching my Pathfinder kids and what Pastor Rob is preaching on.

On Saturday, Pastor Rob encouraged us to memorize God’s word.  This week at Pathfinders I will be teaching the kids Provers 4:21 “Let them [God's words] not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.”

While preparing I had to ask the quesion–why the heart?  I mean when you memorize something doesn’t it have to do with your mind more than anything? In CEF we often defined the heart as “the real you.” The heart is where we say our emotions come from and as I thought more about what the Bible teaches about my heart and what I know about my own heart I saw the wisdom of God in telling us to keep His word in my heart.

What’s in my heart has a lot to do with how I will respond when various situations arrive.  When my expectations aren’t met is my first response dominated by scripture?  What about when something amazing happens?  Or something troubling?  My desire is to be dominated by scripture so that “come what may” I respond walking in a maner worthy of the calling to which I have been called.

Also, check into Desiring God Ministries on Monday to get the sermon he will preach this Sunday, which will focus on Dads.

studying  Yesterday, Pastor Rob preached on how we are to “contend for the faith” (Jude3).  He used the EV Free Church of America’s consideration to change part of its statement of faith to encourage us to consider what exactly are those core teachings of scripture that we cannot and must not budge on and what are those teachings of scripture that are important and yet there can be some “wiggle room.”  If you would like to continue to look more into this subject I recommend the sermon that Mark Dever preached a couple weeks ago at the New Attitude conference titled, “Discern your Doctrine.”  You can listen to it online or download it right HERE.

If you have not been convinced already that attending this years church campout is one of your “must dos of 2007.” Then check out this article by Southern Seminary’s president, Al Mohler, as he highly encourages you to attend.  Ok, he doesn’t specifically mention the Mt. Rose Church campout but he might as well have!  The actual title of his blog is Avoiding “Nature-Deficit Disorder” — It’s About Theology, Not Therapy.  So HERE it is!
